On November 5, 2024, President-elect Donald Trump won Florida by 13 points, over Vice President Kamala Harris. While met with mixed emotions among college students, diverse perspectives were expressed by the University of Florida's student body the following day, November 6, in Turlington Plaza.

The following Wednesday, November 6th, students walking through Turlington Plaza shared how they felt about the election results and about the next four years.

Some students provided one-word answers. Mario Garcia, a freshman Mechanical Engineering major, suggested that he felt “blessed". By contrast, freshman Tess Wasiolek, stated “Okay,”. “Disappointed” shared Carter Fisk, a freshman computer engineering student.

Students shared conflicted sentiments about the next four years. Garcia expressed optimism for the future because he believed the “country was not looking good,” under a potential Harris administration. He sees the election results as an “answered prayer.”

On the other hand, Fisk expressed concerns about former President Trump’s tariff plan and foreign policy. He also expressed concern about the Republican majority in the United States Senate and the increased power this lends.

Adrian Gomez, a freshman exploratory major, made note of his friends’ disagreements by saying, “Everyone I know seems to think it’s going to be a disaster. I think it’s going to be pretty good.”

Tess ultimately expressed indifference, stating “It is what it is.”
